John Reddy, Technical Development Manager of Ecocem Ireland Ltd, has won the Sean deCourcy Student Award at the Irish Concrete Society Awards 2017.

The award is given to the best master’s project on a concrete-related topic from the engineering faculties of the third level institutions. Reddy’s project titled ‘Thermal Activation of Low Carbon Precast Concrete’, encountered tough competition from a number of other highly academic papers on concrete related topics. His research has led to the implementation of industrial scale innovation allowing the Irish precast concrete industry to secure key contracts in the UK.

The award culminates a career path starting in 2004 when John joined the Irish based cement company Ecocem Ireland and pursued further education while working full time. John commented, “Winning the Sean deCourcy award as a mature student from industry is unusual and will without doubt be a highlight of my engineering career. It was difficult to balance work, family, and life commitments with study but this award is welcome recognition of the effort that went into this project. I hope it shows people that you are never too old to learn and it’s never too late to succeed”.

John graduated with a MSc in Advanced Concrete Technology from Queen’s University Belfast. He is an undergraduate from DIT Bolton St. He is a Chartered Engineer with Engineers Ireland and is also a Director of the Institute of Concrete Technology (UK).

The award is named after the late Sean deCourcy, an inspirational professor for many years at UCD, a former chairman of the Irish Concrete Society, an author and historian of note.
