Ecoecem Benelux inaugurates new 5,000 tonne export silo in Moerdijk, Holland
The Moerdijk plant was the first factory opened by the Ecocem Group in 2002. Since then, the Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS) production facility has been extensively expanded and upgraded and the capacity more than doubled to approximately 650,000 tonnes per year.
Ecocem Benelux is a subsidiary of Irish company Ecocem Materials, Europe’s largest independent manufacturer of high performance, low carbon cement.
Ecocem GGBS is a low-carbon binder made from the product of the iron industry. Ecocem GGBS has a carbon footprint that is over 90% lower than traditional cement production.
Ecocem Benelux supply GGBS in bulk to the Benelux market – both concrete and mortars – enabling their customers to use Ecocem GGBS as a substitute for cement (at replacement rates of up to 80%). The facility also exports to the Swedish market and the opening of the new export silo and expansion of capacity further strengthens the group’s efforts in this region.
As part of the inauguration, Ecocem Benelux will also celebrate the doubling of its production capacity, further expansion of their raw material storage capacity as well as the opening of its direct ship loading facility.
The new silo has been built at the waterfront in Moerdijk and rests on 65 piles sunk to a depth of up to 50m. The system operates via a screw extractor conveys the GGBS to the centre of the bulk silo, where screws and a bucket elevator carry it to the new 150 m³ day-silo.
Both trucks and ships can be directly loaded from the silo: trucks on the weighing bridge situated under the silo and ships via a pneumatic transport installation with a maximum capacity of 250 tonnes per hour.
Ecocem Benelux has contributed to the building of major construction and prestige projects in the Netherlands such as the New nhow Rai Hotel near the RAI congress centre in Amsterdam, which is the largest new-build hotel in the Benelux, the Maastoren Office building in Rotterdam, which is the highest office building in the Benelux, the Montevideo Office building and housing in Rotterdam and the Deurganckdok Lock in Antwerp, which is the world’s largest lock.
